Prof. Irshad Manji

Founder, Moral Courage College

The New York Times bestselling author and scholar, Irshad Manji, is the first recipient of Oprah Winfrey’s “Chutzpah Award” for boldness. Prof. Manji has founded Moral Courage College, which mentors people worldwide to turn contentious issues into constructive conversations and shared action. Its signature program, Diversity Without Division, equips educators, parents, and students to practice a unifying method of inclusion so that empathy is fostered even as differences are explored. A professor of leadership at New York University for many years, Prof. Manji now teaches with Oxford University's Initiative for Global Ethics and Human Rights. Her latest book is Don't Label Me: How to Do Diversity Without Inflaming the Culture Wars, (Fun fact: The entertainer Chris Rock calls the book "genius." Another fun fact: Not everybody agrees with Chris Rock.) African by birth, Canadian by citizenship, American by address, and international by reach, Prof. Manji says that the only label she can embrace for herself is “plural.”
